REAMOUS

Reamous lay on the couch reading the files Destel had just sent him about the next target. He'd been planning to find an expert to look at his tablet, but the files had come through five minutes after Isobel had left the house, along with the news that the next assassination would happen the following night. This one, on the face of it, looked just as easy as the last. A house with a decent amount of security. It should be an in-and-out job.

He wasn't going to take anything for granted, though. Not after the last two disasters. His entire leg ached now rather than just his calf.

He needed this job to be a simple one, because he wasn't sure he was physically fit enough to stand another real fight.

When Isobel appeared, he shut off the documents, even though they were in Rakarian. "Hey," he said.

Her smile was small, and she looked on the verge of tears. "Hi."

He frowned, about to ask what was wrong, but she kicked off her shoes and lay on top of him on the couch, curling into his side and burying her face in his neck. He wrapped his arms around her, unable to complain, and brushed his lips across her crown. "Bad day at work?"

"Yeah, something like that."

She reached over to the grab the remote and turned the TV on, resuming whatever she'd been watching the night before. He paid it no attention. He was consumed by the smell of her hair, the feel of her body against his. He knew she must be able to feel his cock hardening, but she didn't flinch or pull away.

He pushed her shirt up and drew pictures on her back with his fingers, allowing his mind to wander back to who might be stealing his files. He'd avoided conflict over the years. He had no enemies.

Maybe it was a friend of Caddir's trying to make him paranoid, but too afraid to actually make a move. That made the most sense.

"You never seem to have any doubts," Isobel said, her index finger making circles on his chest. "How do you always know you're making the right decision?"

"I have doubts." Everything since landing on Earth had been full of doubts. He was completely out of his depth with all of it.

"About what?"

"About taking this work from Destel. About how I feel about my kin. About you. About everything."

She hummed. "You never show it."

"I only doubt things when I'm alone."

"What do you mean?"

"When you're here, and I'm with you, I know that I'd do whatever it took to keep you safe. It's only when I have time to think about it that I doubt it."

She propped herself up so she could see him, and she looked dangerously close to tears. Her hand was on his chest, their faces dangerously close. "Because of the akhan?"

"Yes."

"Don't you hate it?"

"What do you mean?"

"When you explain it to me it sounds like it's holding you prisoner. Like you have to do what it says even though you don't necessarily want to.
